How are the indicated difficulty levels defined?

papagei.com categorises videos according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (CEFR).

Easy” corresponds to “A: Basic User (A1 and A2)”,

intermediate” corresponds to “B: Independent User (B1 and B2)” and

difficult” corresponds to “C: Proficient User (C1: Effective Operational Proficiency, C2: Mastery)”.

Easy features
 
A1:

You can understand and use familiar expressions and very basic phrases. You can understand other people and make yourself understood (e.g. introducing yourself, talking about hobbies) provided they talk slowly and clearly and are prepared to help.

A2:

You can understand frequently used expressions, e.g. relating to family, shopping, work, local surroundings). You can make yourself understood in everyday situations that are not complex and are about familiar and routine matters.

 

Intermediate features
 
B1:

You can understand the main points of a conversation provided clear, standard speech is used and it is about familiar matters relating to work, school, leisure activities etc. You can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. You can describe, for instance, personal goals and interests in a cohesive manner.

B2:

You can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialisation. You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.

 

Difficult features
 
C1:

You can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, including implicit meaning. You can use the language flexibly as well as in a well-structured manner and over a longer period of time in social and professional contexts.

C2:

You can understand with ease virtually anything heard or read. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in complex situations.
